Our history

Our history – maritime heritage dating since 1842
In 1842 Fop Smit started providing vessels with a safe and reliable passage into the port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The fleet gradually grew and upon Fop's death in 1866, SMIT operated six tugs. From these humble beginnings we have consistently built on and added to our knowledge and experience. In 2010, SMIT became part of Boskalis. Together, SMIT and Boskalis focus on servicing clients in the Ports and Energy market, optimizing our combined knowledge, strength and expertise.
